Rockingham Penguins

Rocking penguins and dolphins

26 °C

Our last day in Perth we decided to get out of town to Rockingham. A place that not really rocks, but does have some interesting wildlife.
We took the boat to Penguin Island, and besides seeing some flocks of pelicans we did see the little penguins. They were cute, see below!

Afterwards we made a long stroll at the beach back to Rockingham. And we did see several dolphins swimming by. Apparently they liked us.
We will see more wild dolphins later in Monkey Mia, where they really get together everyday and where they travel in packs!

Arts Festival 2012 Perth

Acrobatic & Artistic Angels and More

sunny 30 °C

11th February there was a special show called 'Place des Anges' for the opening of the 2012 Arts Festival.

In this major Festival celebration Angels landed on St Georges Terrace between Council House and St George's Cathedral in a breathtaking display you had to see to believe. Place Des Anges, an aerial performance by French based Les Studios de Cirque, provided a spectacular opening to the 60th Perth International Arts Festival. Place Des Anges blends circus aerobatics with rope rigging techniques allowing performers dressed as angels to float effortlessly high above the ground. More than 1000 kg of feathers were released in the air by the 20 acrobats, who were dangling on ropes at more than 100 meters in the sky. Everybody got covered in feathers, this was a lot of feathered fun !

Besides this we got our dose of 'cultural' events such as the infamous couple "Freak and the Showgirl" with their unforgettable impression of Redemption Song at the Fringe World and some cool rockabilly music at the Devilles Pad Hell's themed bar, loved the dancing !

Not to forget the performance of Little Roy, who performed relaxed reggae tunes and groovier versions of Nirvana songs such as 'Come as you are'.

Perth

Crazy, Hot, Tasty City

sunny 30 °C

February 7th we arrived in Perth, the most isolated city in the world, on the western coast of Australia. To make our arrival the smoothest possible we stayed at Scarborough Beach 2 days to get familiar with the Australian Beach Life. We did enjoy a really clear sunset with our feet in the water.

After hanging loose at the Beach, it was time for action, so we went to check out the Swan Valley. What better way to do that with a vineyard tour!
9th February we went with a bunch of people to several places, firstly Houghton and then some smaller Croatian creator of the divine liquid.
Our taste buds got challenged afterwards with chocolates and nougat, and to make sure we enjoyed we had some good Beer tasting as well.

The city Perth itself is pretty big, with a mixture of very new and very old re-fabricated houses. Around Perth there are several things to visit, such as the Zoo (yes we did see the Kangaroos, Koalas and Tasmanian Devils...) , Kings Park (Great views from this green zone), and we went to Fremantle an old style town with a small harbour and the infamous Fremantle Prison.

The Fremantle prison was opened in 1850 and at time was a very modern place. However end 80ies several things went wrong in this institute. By putting over a 100 convicts in a place where the temperature might rise to 50 degrees, with no running water and smelly buckets as main toilet facility, this is just asking for problems. This lead to several outbreaks and a massive riot in 1988 with a big fire as result. Finally in 1991, the place was closed down and now it is a museum to show how the first inmates of Australia lived.

Still a lot of great pictures to come from the Angel show, Penguin Island, Sydney, Blue Mountains and our 2000 km road trip to Exmouth !

Singapore

Secrets of Luxurious Singapore

sunny 28 °C

After almost 11 hours and more than 10.000 km we arrived in Singapore. The New York City of the Asian World. The Little India area gave us shelter for 4 nights. This backpackers area is packed with Indians and Vegetarian restaurants. Somehow they get along very well. The right time of the year for amusement it was indeed...

Firstly we went with Duck tours for a ride in a special bus through town and afterwards this bus went on the water to show us the hotspots such as the Lion Fountain, related to the name 'Singa', which means lion in Tamil language. Apparently the first explorers thought they did see this animal, although there have never been lions on the island, maybe it could have been an Malayan tiger. Secondly we went for the scenic Russian wheel "the Singapore Flyer' up to 120 meters around to see the skyline. The Singapore Flyer

Thirdly we saw on Saturday night the biggest live street parade of Asia : Chingay. It looked like every college had a special dance and outfit for this celebration of the Chinese New Year of the Dragon. So finally we did not really miss Carnaval that much, because they were also pretty funny and amusing. Especially the 1000 people that master the Kung Fu skills were impressive. They did a simultaneous Singapore ShowDown all at once.Ofcourse in the end we got plenty of fireworks. And all of this at the beautiful bay with its magnificent Skyline. Kung_Fu_Chingay.jpg

On Sunday 5th of February, to pleasure the needs of my dearest travel companion, we went up to the 250meter viewpoint of the latest and greatest hotel "the Sands". Indeed a big weekend of big spending, I mean big sight-seeing!

On our last day we went to Universal Studios and went on many rollercoaster rides we will not forget. The Shrek 4D experience also made us laugh and scream out loud. Shrek4D at Universal Studios
